Her work as an educator – both at the university level and in the larger public sphere – has always emphasized the importance of building communities of struggle for economic, racial, and gender justice. Professor Davis’ teaching career has taken her to San Francisco State University, Mills College, and UC Berkeley. She also has taught at UCLA, Vassar, Syracuse University the Claremont Colleges, and Stanford University. Mostly recently she spent fifteen years at the University of California Santa Cruz where she is now Distinguished Professor Emerita of History of Consciousness – an interdisciplinary Ph.D program – and of Feminist Studies. Angela Davis is the author of nine books and has lectured throughout the United States as well as in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America. In recent years a persistent theme of her work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination. How to Be a Woman and Not Give a Fuck

How to Be a Woman and Not Give a Fuck with Airial Clark, MA Being a woman comes with so many pressures to give all the fucks, all the time. We are socially conditioned to put other people first: their needs, their opinions, their desires. What would it be like to be women who don't give a fuck about any of that? We use an inclusive definition of “woman” where trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people who are female-identified are welcome to the class. There's a way we can as women, reclaim our inner authority from the outside world. Decide for ourselves how and when we want to engage with the needs, opinions and desires of other people. Especially the people who seem to think they know our experience better than we do. Spend an evening learning with Airial Clark, an expert with over 30 years in fuck-giving or not giving. This workshop will be experiential and dynamic where participants will try out many different ways to practice being a woman and not giving a fuck. Suggested Donation: $15-$20 (No one turned down for lack of funds

Cause and Effect: Racism, Poverty, and Public

The lives of many Americans are shaped by living with long-term trauma brought on by discrimination and poverty. Chronic exposure to adverse life events such as racism or racialization, gender-based prejudice, fewer opportunities for education and employment, high rates of incarceration, and systemic inequity have tangible health effects on both individuals and communities. Although uniquely complicated, science can help navigate the scope of the mechanisms and their real world impact, and hopefully help us engage the issue to redress the harm. At this Science on Tap, epidemiologist Dr. Frank A. Franklin, PhD, JD, MPH, Director of the Community Epidemiology Services at the Multnomah County Health Department, will explore the intersection of inequality and public health and the search for how to improve the well-being of vulnerable populations. ***EVENT DETAILS*** DATE: Tuesday, January 16, 2018 TIME: Doors at 6:00 p.m. event at 7:00 p.m. LOCATION: 3000 NE Alberta Street, Portland, Ore. COST: $15* general admission, $8 students with ID (minors under 21 with parent/guardian only) Buy tickets online (see link above) or at the Alberta Rose Box office FOOD & DRINK: Beer, wine, popcorn, hand pies, and an assortment of sweets and snacks available. Giovanni was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on June 7, 1943, and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. After earning a B.A. from Fisk University in Nashville in 1967, she organized the Black Arts Festival in Cincinnati before entering graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. Menopause The Musical

Menopause The Musical® is a groundbreaking celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change.” Now celebrating 16 years of female empowerment through hilarious musical comedy, Menopause The Musical® has evolved as a "grassroots" movement of women who deal with life adjustments after 40 by embracing each other and the road ahead. Set in a department store, four women meet while shopping for a black lace bra at a lingerie sale. After noticing unmistakable similarities among one another, the cast jokes about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain and much more. These women form a sisterhood and unique bond with the entire audience as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.” Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® is a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “The Change.” The laughter-filled 90-minute production gets audience members out of their seats and singing along to parodies from classic pop songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

The politics of resentment in 2018 with Kathy

UW-Madison political scientist Kathy Cramer was years ahead of her time in examining rural political consciousness in America. Between 2007 and 2012, she traveled in rural Wisconsin to listen to diner and coffee-shop conversations to understand how residents there view the political world. The resulting book, “The Politics of Resentment” published in early 2016, was a prescient look at how that worldview would affect 2016’s momentous election. Please join us for a special edition of Cap Times Talks featuring Cramer interviewed by our political reporter, Jessie Opoien. They’ll talk about Wisconsin’s 2018 gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races and more as well. The event is free and will start with a meet-and-greet at 6:30 p.m. The discussion itself will start at 7, ending after an hour or so. Special thanks to our sponsor, Home Savings Bank, whose support helps make the event possible.
